Wood Flooring Care TipsCleaning Wood Floors When cleaning wood flooring, you should always avoid using water. Water or any water-based cleanser used over time will dull the floor and eventually cause the wood to rot. To clean your floor, you should use wax instead. Put the wax on a rug and apply regularly especially in heavy traffic areas. If you have a big family, make sure that you apply wax regularly in areas like the dining room, stairs and stair landings, room entries and other parts of the house, which are more frequently used. Applying wax on wood will help slow down the process of wear and tear and promote a more lustrous look. Tips on Maintaining Wood Flooring Use doormats at all doorways that lead outside so that people coming into the house will be able to wipe their shoes clean upon entering. Without doormat, your wood flooring could be subjected to sand, dirt, grease and dirt which could lead to scratching, dulling and staining if not cleaned right away. During the wet season, it would be a good idea to provide a shoe rack and some dry shoes or slippers just outside of your front door so that family members and guests coming in from the rain or snow would be able to change into something dry before stepping onto the floor. When moving heavy furniture across wood flooring, be sure to use some pads on the legs of the furniture to prevent denting and scratching your wooden floor. Also, when moving furniture inside your house, do not drag them on the floor. Dragging your furniture on the floor will also cause scratches that can be very difficult to remove. Be sure you have enough help so that you can lift the furniture if you want to transfer it from one place to another. If you have pets in your home, make sure that you trim their nails regularly. The long nails of your dog or cat will leave some dents and scratches on wood flooring. Furthermore, make sure that the paws of your dog are clean when it comes inside the house. Do not let your dog inside the house unless you are sure that its paws are clean, as some dirt, gravel or oils brought in by your dog may stain your floor. If you follow these routine care and maintenance tips, your wood flooring will last a long time and you will reap big rewards if you ever decide to sell your home. |
