Making A Wood Bird House

Have you ever tried to make a wood bird house? It is really a lot easier then it sounds and a great deal of fun. Making bird houses is a great team building project for kids, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, employees and any other group working together on a project. It's a creative process and there are lots of different ways to make wood bird houses that are easy, innovative and relaxing.

Kits

Wood bird houses can be purchased prefabricated and ready to be painted or stained, or they can be bought in a kit ready for assembly. They are very inexpensive to purchase and make great fund raiser opportunities for groups looking for a different sort of fundraising project. The kits range in price from $4.00 to $12.00 and only a dollar two or more for the prefabricated wood bird houses. It only takes glue to assemble most of the bird houses and the fancier ones will need a few small nails.

There are also rustic birdhouses which give your backyard a different sort of feel than the traditional wood bird houses. For instance, there is a bird house called the Wood Nuthatch Box that is constructed entirely of pine. This little wooden bird house is perfect for nuthatches and chickadees. The side of the bird house has a small hinge on the bottom and a pull screw on the side to pull it down for easy cleaning. The base of the house is drilled for ventilation and the sides have a quarter inch free space at the top for more ventilation. Another rustic wooden bird house is the Wood Flicker Box. This bird house is also made entirely of pine and it attracts the colorful Flickers during the mating season. This base is also drilled for ventilation and the top lifts up for easy refilling of sawdust and the side drops down for easy cleaning at the end of the season. Each of these rustic wood bird houses comes with a starter bag of sawdust.

Craft Shows

Craft shows are another wonderful market place to find beautiful wood bird houses. These bird houses are usually painted in bright beautiful colors and many have a lot of detail work on them. Wood bird houses can come in the shape of churches, houses, barns, cars, animals, wagons and toys. Actually, the possibilities are endless for the different styles of birdhouses. Making your on bird house is a great way to get your children to learn and respect nature and its habitat.
