Water Gardening: Adding The Element Of Water To Your GardenWater gardening is gaining popularity, and many are adding a variety of water features to their gardens. A water feature can be as simple as a fountain or as creative as an entire pond. Water gardening allows for the gardener to expand their knowledge of gardening and learn about new plants. The Beginning Stages Of Water Gardening When deciding to begin water gardening, first check out space available. Depending on how much space, a water garden can be created to fit that space. If you are interested in a koi pond, it will have to be at least 2 feet deep to allow for the koi fish to live. A koi pond can be very lovely, but remember if you live somewhere where the temperture gets down to freezing, the koi fish have to be able to survive and still have unfrozen water, so the pond needs to be deep to accommodate this. The next step is to draw out what shape your water garden will be. When digging out the water garden, you can make shelves within the water garden. The purpose of the shelves is to allow for plants to be placed on them. The plants can either be planted in pots or then set on the shelves or they can be placed directly into the dirt. By placing plants in a pot, the plants can then be extracted easily from the water garden for additional care or if they need to be replaced. When water gardening, remember to look into pumps and water skimmers for the pond. These help circulate oxygen in the water maintaining a healthy level for fish and other plants. These will need to be hooked up to an electrical outlet, so make sure to dig a trench for power lines. A liner can also be used within the pond. Liners can be purchased at area gardening stores and there are even some that are pre-fabricated so that the shape of the pond is already made. Plants for a water garden can also be purchased at area gardening stores or even on-line. Some plants are free floating and don't need soil to survive. While others need to be root bound. A combination is attractive for a water garden. Water gardening is a great way to change up a current garden with an extraordinary feature. |
