The Newest Toy For Grown Ups: The Snow Scooter

It looks like a moped on skis. It's lighter, cheaper and easier to store than a snowmobile. It's a snow scooter and it's one of the current toys to get grown ups hopes pounding. And, for those worried gas prices, electric snow scooters are also available. Some snow scooters come with conversion kits where you can remove the skis and replace them with wheels, so you can ride it even when Mother Nature doesn't cooperate.

Different Types For Different Kinds Of Fun

There are several different kinds of snow scooters with different body shapes and uses. One of the most common types has already been described. But another type looks like a handle bar stuck onto a large snowboard. You definitely need snow for these types of scow scooters. You have to stand on this. This kind of snow scooters are the least expensive you can buy.

Snow scooters come in a wide range of colors and sizes. Most are made just for one person, but some two-seaters can be found. You can also find personally modified machines done by hobbyists, but they would be for sale irregularly. Some snow scooters (especially the people-powered kind designed for kids coasting down a hill) will have a weight limit on them.

Legal Stuff

Unlike snowmobiles, you do not need driver's insurance for snow scooters, just as you don't need insurance for motor scooters. However, if you cause an accident, you still will be legally responsible for damages. You might also want to check your local Department of Motor Vehicles office about scooters. There are some cities that have laws pending banning any kind of scooter for public safety.

Also, because any kind of motor scooter is not considered a "real" vehicle, there is no regulation of any kind on them. This means they don't have to pass any safety tests or perform to a certain standard. This appeals greatly to people who love to tinker with things like their scooters. However, if you are looking for a certain consistency in quality, you might not find it.

When buying any kind of motor scooter, see if you can get any kind of limited warranty on them. As they are not considered real vehicles, any warranties will be limited, indeed. If you are responsible and have good hand-eye coordination, you can still find places to have fun with a snow scooter. They are not recommended for six lane highways, but they can get you to the corner store and back.
