Necessary Mobility Scooter Accessories

Buying a mobility scooter is a bit like buying a very little motorcycle. You can't just get the motorcycle and that's it with being able to get the most out of it. You need a helmet, gloves, goggles and jacket, at least. Although you won't need those for a mobility scooter (not unless you strap a jet engine to it), there are still some scooter accessories that you will need.

Batteries

The most essential mobility scooter accessories you will ever need are batteries to recharge your scooter every night (or day, whichever is more convenient for you). Unfortunately, mobility scooters are not powered by huge hamsters on treadmills. Perhaps one day they will be powered by huge hamsters on treadmills, but until that day, they are powered by electricity. You will get nowhere fast if you don't get a battery.

Covers And Canopies

One of the ways you can keep your scooter clean and protect it somewhat from the weather (even if stored in a garage) is to get a scooter cover. These aren't vitally essential scooter accessories, but they can certainly help protect your very expensive of vital equipment. Another scooter accessory is the canopy, which looks like a little umbrella over your head. This helps keep you in the shade on a hot day.

Cushion Covers

Think about all of the work your cushion is going to do for you. It's going to wear out, sooner rather than later. You can help keep it looking nice and put your own individual stamp on your mobility scooter by putting on cushion covers. They work the same way seat covers work; they usually just slip on. They come in a wide variety of colors and patterns.

Pouches And Holders

Not all mobility scooters come with a little basket on the front. And, even if you have one, it might not be enough for a day's errands. You can carry more with scooter accessories designed to fit on wheelchairs and mobility scooters called packs, pouches or holders. Sometimes they are strapped onto the back of the scooter or hang off of the frame. You don't want one that hangs underneath the scooter - that's just for wheelchairs.

Is This Stuff Covered By Medicare?

Scooter accessories are not covered by Medicare or most health insurance companies. Even the batteries are generally not covered. Medicare and the health insurance industry does not consider scooter accessories to be essential to survival. However, even if you bought something from all of the categories mentioned above, they still will be less than half of what your scooter cost.
