Locating Your Satellite TV Frequency

So you've decided to buy a satellite dish, the needed equipment and a programming package from a programming provider. Now what? The next step is to find the right place for the dish and set it at the right angle to receive the signal you're paying for. If you're making this decision for your home, you'll be hearing about the ease of cable TV before you're done. But if you're taking advantage of the real selling point for satellite TV - the ability to take it along on an RV, boat or camper - you'll be feeling a bit superior.

Where, Oh Where?

Whether you're setting things up for your home or your home away from home, you'll need to find an unobstructed path from satellite to dish. This may mean trimming trees at home or avoiding them elsewhere. The first step to grabbing the satellite TV frequency is to read the manual. That's the first step in many projects, but you can't skip it for this project. The next step will be to find the right channel on your TV. This will help you know when you find the right satellite TV frequency.

The remote control should enable you to find the setup screen. Follow the instructions to find the right angle. You will probably be asked to enter your zip code so the angle can be figured. The setting needed to connect your location to your satellite will be given in elevation and azimuth. The elevation is the angle at which you have to tilt your dish toward the sky. Your satellite is most likely in a geosynchronous orbit around the equator.

The azimuth is the compass direction that will get your dish to face the satellite directly and get the best satellite TV frequency. A compass is needed here. The azimuth number corresponds to the direction. North is 0, east is 90, south is 180 and west is 270. Find your number and turn the satellite to the direction nearest the correct number and figure which way you have to turn it and how far in order to get it correct.

You should see a meter on your TV showing how close to the satellite TV frequency you are by how strong the signal is. As you move the dish to improve the signal, wait several seconds for the signal strength to register before moving again. If you are getting a signal but it is not locking on, you may be aimed at the satellite TV frequency of the wrong satellite. Your setup screen should tell you if you're receiving the wrong signal. Once you have the right signal and strength, you'll be rewarded for all of your efforts.
