Quality Wind Chimes Create Their Own MusicMost of the better quality wind chimes are made of metal pipes and the length of the pipes, the thickness of the metal of which the pipe is made will determine the sound made when the pipe is struck. The pipes are typically hung at one-fifth of their length, so the big difference in length is at the bottom of the pipe, but the ball, usually located in the center of the pipes is hung so as to strike each in the middle of the pipe. The ball in the center can be made of metal, wood or even rubber, which helps determine the sound of the quality wind chimes when struck. Some folks will use wind chimes to help determine wind direction and hang them on the north side of their house, for instance to be notified when the wind is blowing from the north. This will only work, of course, if the wind is blocked from hitting the chimes from any other direction. Sound Quality Determined By Materials The type of material used to make quality wind chimes will determine the sound they make. The type of metal used, for example, whether it is brass, aluminum, copper or another type of alloy will determine the tone of the sound. The length of the pipe will determine the pitch of the sound and in a whistle shape, similar to that of a pipe organ, the size of the hole will determine the quality or the voice of quality wind chimes. There are specific engineering techniques used to create quality wind chimes although some people believe that hanging metal objects around a ball and having it make noise when the wind blows makes a wind chime. To the connoisseur of quality wind chimes these contraptions are decorations, and with them beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The use of wind chimes is a person choice and some folks find a comfort in the sounds they make. There are some quality wind chimes from which the singing is rather loud and considered annoying by some. With wildlife, it can take a few days for it to become accustomed to hearing the chimes when they are first hung up, but eventually it will become part of the natural outdoor sounds. |
