The Uses of Plants

Plants are living things that usually use the sun to create their own food. They do this using a process called photosynthesis. This is a relatively simple process that converts sunlight, which is gathered using their leaves, and the glucose produced by photosynthesis is used by the organisms for their growth and the manufacture of seeds.

People benefit from these living things through many ways. The most important use is for the oxygen that we breathe. They use our gaseous emissions in their food developing and growth. They, in turn, emit oxygen which we use to breathe.

We Need Plants

People also rely on plants for food. They supply is with crops such as legumes and potatoes and also rice, wheat and corn which are staples in most peoples' diets. Not to mention, the fruits, herbs and spice which we get from them. We also get our sugar from them and they are also sources of some of our beverages such as wine, coffee and tea. There is no end to the bounty of food which people can get from plants.

The animals that we raise for our consumption also rely mainly on plants for their food. This is an indirect way that people rely on them for food. Most of the animals that we consume, even those in the seas or rivers and lakes rely on aquatic plant life to supply them with food, whether directly or indirectly. Two of the people's basic needs rely heavily on plants and these two are the most important in the list of basic needs.

Other uses for plants are for paper, building materials, clothing and wood for chairs, tables and other furniture. Paper is a prime commodity in our world and we use it daily for the most basic activities in our lives. It is also used for newspapers, books and other things. Timber is used for building homes, offices and other structures. From the old days up to now, timber has figured mainly in making homes. Clothing is derived from plants using their flowers, flax or cellulose. One fine example of clothing from plants is cotton.

More uses of these living things are for medicine and other medical remedies, dyes and pigments, bathroom essentials like soaps, cosmetics and also some poisons. All these products have been studied for years and even more are uses are being discovered, especially in the medical field. Another less important yet very human need for plants is for aesthetic purposes. People use them to decorate and bring life to a room or area.
