Expert Interior Painting Tips

It is so easy to change the scope and look of an interior room simply by adding a coat of paint. With paint being a relatively inexpensive way to change the look of a room, many people are choosing to redecorate their homes using a wide array of paint colors. Before you tackle a painting project, consider these simple, yet smart, interior painting tips.

Interior Painting Tip Number One: Size Does Matter

The paint that you choose for your interiors has the power to visually lengthen, widen, or even shrink a room, so careful thought must be put into color selection. If you are considering painting a small room, it is important to keep in mind that darker colors will make the room seem even smaller. Usually a good color choice for a small room is light beige or something in the pastel range. If your heart is set on painting your tiny dining room a deep colonial cranberry color, consider adding white crown molding or even a white chair rail to break up the dark color. Another great interior painting tip that will allow you to paint a room in a dark hue is to only paint the top half of the room dark, adding white wainscoting to the bottom half of the room.

Other options include incorporating a large mirror into your wall art or painting the bottom sections of the walls a dark color and the top portions a lighter complimentary color.

Interior Painting Tip Number Two: Well Done Starts With Well Begun

The way that you begin a paint job really affects the finished look of your room. Take the time to carefully clean all surfaces before you paint and do a good job taping off the surfaces that you want to keep free of paint. Another important interior painting tip is to always use a good primer before you apply the color of choosing. Taking the time to apply one coat of quality primer can actually save you from having to apply extra coats of the more expensive paint you choose to color your room with. It is especially important to use a primer when you are painting with porous colors such as the ones found in the red family. Talk to your paint store sales team and ask for their recommendation when picking out a primer. There are primers made to compliment different colors of paint and using a primer made for your paint color will keep the original wall color from bleeding through.
