Keep It Swirling With Hot Tub Maintenance

A hot tub is the perfect place to unwind after a hard day or for therapeutic use. However, to keep the water crystal clear and to keep it flowing at optimum efficiency hot tub maintenance needs to be performed on a scheduled basis.

Using a chemical testing kit, on a daily basis as part of you hot tub maintenance routine, the level of sanitizer and the pH level needs to be checked. The addition of appropriate chemicals at this time will help keep the water in fit condition for use. The ideal pH level is between 7.4 and 7.6. Add either pH Plus or pH Minus to bring it into the proper range.

Calcium is a threat that can be eliminated with regular hot tub maintenance. The recommended level of calcium 100 to 200 milligrams per liter (about a quart) of water. Below this level can cause damage to equipment such as water pump and filter. If the calcium level is above this level it can cause the water to appear cloudy and leave deposits on the tub walls and cause additional damage to equipment.

Proper sanitation of your water is also a recommended step in hot tub maintenance. Bromine is an excellent choice for hot tub sanitation as, in tablet form, is easy to insert and has virtually no odor. Chlorine, in the form of granules, will dissolve quickly. Either will work as part of hot tub maintenance and kills bacteria and germs present in the water.

Fight Against Lotions And Oils Build-up

Sweat, cosmetics and natural body oils will be in the water after just a few uses and oxidizing the water as part of routine hot tub maintenance will keep them at bay. By oxidizing your hot tub weekly with a non-chlorine shock, it will help dissolve and remove them, keeping the water clear and comfortable.

Periodically, part of your hot tub maintenance will include the need to drain and refill it. The frequency of this step will be determined by how many people are using it daily and big it is. A basic rule of thumb is to take the amount of water, divide it by the number of people using the tub and divide that by 12. For example, if your tub holds 600 gallons of water and it used by two people, it should be drained and refilled once every 25 days.

Following simple hot tub maintenance on a daily, weekly, monthly and periodic basis will allow for years of efficient use.
