Requirements For A Hearth Rug

A hearth rug is a rug or carpet that is sort of like an area rug and is usually placed in front of the hearth or fireplace. This kind of rug is usually shaped in a semi circle to accommodate the shape of the fireplace or hearth in from of which it is placed. A hearth rug is sometimes placed on top of the carpet or the floor, whichever is used in the area. There are certain requirements when it comes to what a hearth rug should be made of and what role it plays in the home.

Resistant To Flame And Sparks

This is the single most important requirement that a hearth rug must have. The reason for this is that sparks and embers may sometimes roll out of the hearth or fly out of the fireplace and land on the floor directly in front. This is a potentially dangerous situation especially if the hearth rug being used is not resistant to flame and sparks. Making your won rug can be dangerous if you have no idea if the material you are using

There are many ways to ensure that the rug is flame resistant and not prone to combustion. Checking to see the label and tag of the rug before purchase is a surefire way f ensuring that the hearth rug is not prone to catching fire when sparks or live coals fall on it. Many natural wool rugs have the capacity to be flame resistant due to the natural protein that natural wool contains. This rug can also be made into a great kitchen rug as wool can resist water and flame.

Hearth rugs are also placed in front of hearths and fireplaces mainly to protect the carpet or wooden floor directly in front of a wide open hearth. Live coal and embers can singe a wooden floor and also introduce blackened marks on the carpet. Rugs that are not flame resistant are fire hazards which need to be addressed by adding a hearth rug or bricking up the hearth to avoid sparks and coal from flying out.

Bricking up a fireplace or a hearth can reduce the risk of singeing the carpet and the combustion of the carpet but these are not guarantees of being out of danger. Even putting a hearth rug does not guarantee that danger is past. There are many different designs and colors for hearth rugs. The homeowner can choose a rug that best complements the room and the décor in it as well as functions as a hearth rug should.
