The History Of The Mallis Handbook Of Pest Control

These days, pest control is big business, with several major companies such as Orkin in the business of quickly and reliably eliminating pests from homes and businesses. However, one hundred years ago, there was little known about pest control. During that time, someone had to write the handbook of pest control, literally. In this case, Arnold Mallis became the pioneer who catalogued his experiences with pests Because of his diligent work in this area, the Mallis Handbook of Pest Control has become the definitive work on pest control.

Early Start

Arnold Mallis got his start in the pest control industry not as a pest control technician, but as a cartoonist, working in trade magazines. However, this job seemed to spark an interest for the future writer of the Handbook of Pest Control, and he eventually earned his B.S. and then his M.S. in entomology, the study of insects. It was after this that Mallis received his first job as a pest control technician, which would later form the basis of his experiences recorded in the Handbook Of Pest Control. Further experiences working at UCLA as entomologist and in Louisiana trying to control causes of malaria formed the basis of his Handbook of Pest Control.

Later Years

After his time as a pest control technician, Mallis eventually devoted himself to research, working at the Gulf Oil Company. There, he worked to develop insecticides, which allowed him to further his knowledge of what works and what doesn't work when attempting to control pests, another valuable period for the Mallis Handbook of Pest Control. After this time, he became an entomology professor at Pennsylvania State University, which meant he was able to further study insects while perfecting his teaching abilities.

The Result

The result of these years of work in entomology and in the pest control business is a definitive handbook of pest control. This book is an essential tool for pest control technicians and in at least one case, is used as a text for entomology courses. Since the death of Mallis in 1984, other authors have contributed to the book, which has further made it a comprehensive handbook of pest control, with perspectives from many leading experts in the field. If you do have an interest in pest control, then the Mallis Handbook of Pest control should be the first source you read. As a record of a lifetime of experiences in pest control, it is the definitive book on the topic.
