Green Roses Offer Unique Beauty for the Rose Lover

St. Patrick is no longer simply the name of a patron saint or a holiday in March. Today, gardeners who hear the term "St. Patrick" may think of the species of rose that happens to be the greenest of them all. Green roses come in a variety of shapes and shades, but are certainly not the most common plants that you will see lining the shelves of nurseries this year. In fact, most of the varieties of green roses are hard to find indeed, although some can be purchased through some mail order companies. Nearly all of these roses have been hybridized by amateur and master gardeners alike, and come from the far corners of the earth.

A Leprechaun's Delight

The St. Patrick rose actually did not originate in Ireland at all, but in sunny southern California. The plant is surprisingly robust, and gives off many beautiful heads during the blooming season. The green buds of this tearose will open to flaunt yellow flowers that become quite tinged with green over the course of a few days after blooming. This color will intensify on plants that are growing in shady areas, and offer beautiful, long stemmed green roses that you can cut for your table. What an unusual centerpiece for your next dinner party, or the perfect accent to your St. Patrick's Day holiday decor!

Another green rose that did originate in Ireland is the species known as Lime Sublime. This rose is quite tolerant of heat, and will give its owner plenty of constant blooms in its unique shade. The flowers are a creamy white, tinged with plenty of green, and the bushes of this green rose become quite full of blooms even during the warmest part of the summer season. These roses are short on aroma, but long on beauty, making them an attractive and unique addition to many garden landscapes.

There is another species of green rose that has made an appearance in Maine, and this flower is known as the Unique Green Rose. This plant will sport large blooms of an apple green hue, and plenty of them, with three to eight blooms per cluster. This variety of green rose also appears to be quite hearty and resistant to some diseases such as black spot. While this rose is only found in Maine currently, and is not available for public purchase, the popularity of the green roses may certainly bring this species on the market before long.
