The Car GPS at its Best

The car GPS, or global positioning system, is basically the process of getting from one location to another. In this process of moving between locations, you can actually monitor and track your progress. There are man different handheld GPS systems, as well as units that are directly installed into the vehicle. The car GPS navigation systems use computer hardware and software with several components, and these components include a highly detailed database. This GPS database is an electronic road map and includes a directory of potential travel destinations and businesses in the region. This database is stored in the CD-ROM of the car GPS.

A second component is the GPS receiver. This receiver picks up GPS signals that locate the car's position as it travels. The next component is the monitor, which is a screen that displays the electronic maps, system menus and other useful information that the driver might need. The CD-ROM is the device which reads the database and electronic map features that are stored within its drive. The central processing unit or CPU works on piecing together all the information that it gathers from each component, and determines the driver's location, calculates routes, and displays the car's position on the monitor.

The Maps

The car GPS maps are all kept on a CD-ROM. CD's can only hold a certain amount of information, so different discs are used for different regions. Anyone who owns a car GPS will need to update their CD's annually. Most of the CD's in the United States will include maps of the entire United States and Canada. DVD's are now replacing the CD's because a single disc is much more comprehensive than the CD. It is very frustrating for a driver to depend on his car GPS to find a location, when his GPS suddenly begins circling a parking lot! Unfortunately for this car GPS, the parking lot used to be a road that led to somewhere. Urban development has made many GPS units confused to the point of sending its driver to the phone for directions.

The most popular car GPS mapping device is the Garmin V GPS. This device comes with a series of base-maps loaded into its firmware. In the United States, this would include parts of major cities and the interstate system. The local urban and rural CD's are downloaded on top of these, so if you decide to drive outside of the local maps, the system will revert to its base map. Since the GPS is the first positioning system to offer highly precise location data for any point in the world, in any type of weather, this qualifies it as a major utility. Business relies on scores of vehicles to deliver goods and services either across a crowded city or through nationwide highways, so the car GPS has become a necessity for the business person and the traveler. The age of travel has once again stepped up the game of technology.
