Simple Bermuda Grass Lawn CareBermuda grass lawn care is low maintenance; it grows the best when mowed to a height of one to two inches and needs thorough soakings to promote long rooting. When Bermuda grass roots shallow it will brown and die, fertilizers will not be able to restore it once the roots have begun to grow shallowly. Daily Bermuda Grass Lawn Care Bermuda grass lawn care in the spring should begin as soon as the thaw, most grasses benefit from a "booster shot" of fertilizer at the first thaw to help them recover from a long winter without food. Mowing is an important part of Bermuda grass lawn care; the first cutting should be when the first green grass appears. Bermuda grass does best when the dry clippings are left on the grass or raked to evenly cover the grass. The quickly decomposing cuttings will nourish the growing grass as well as many commercial fertilizers. Throughout the spring Bermuda grass lawn care should include mowing weekly and watering twice a week if there is no rain during the week. To gauge exactly when the best time is to water a screwdriver can be plunged into the soil four to six inches, if the soil on the tip is moist the grass has sufficient water. At the end of the spring another dose of fertilizer is usually needed for optimum green and growth through the heating temperatures and the up coming lack of rain common in most areas during the summer months. Bermuda grass lawn care will have to be performed more often during the summer months. From June through August most Bermuda grass lawn care routines will increase to mow twice weekly and water three times a week depending on rain. The Bermuda grass grows the best when kept around two inches during the hottest months as the taller grass protects the roots of the grass from the more intense sun. At the end of the summer a fall "booster" of fertilizer will help the Bermuda grass remain green longer into the fall months. As temperatures drop Bermuda grass lawn care will return to much the same routine as the spring. The only exception is to only mow and water until the grass begins to change on its own towards the end of the season. As a Bermuda lawn goes into the winter, the last part of the Bermuda grass lawn care routine is to mow the grass a final time and top it off with extra fertilizer to help the grass make it through the winter. |
