Alarm System Keypad - Proper Placement

One of the most overlooked things when setting up a home alarm system is where to place the alarm system keypad. This is the most important feature of your alarm system and as such should get as much thinking and planning into location as any of the motion sensors, window and door monitors, and video cameras. Unfortunately most people simply place the alarm system keypad as an afterthought where ever is convenient. This article is going to look at some factors that will help you find the best place to put your alarm system keypad.

Placing The Alarm System Keypad In Your Home

The first and most obvious thing to consider where placing your alarm system keypad in your home is where you most commonly enter your house. You want it to be somewhat near this spot so that when you come in and leave you can arm and disarm the alarm system in a reasonable amount of time. However, you absolutely do not want to place the unit in a spot where it can be seen from outside the home.

The reason for this is simple - if someone can see the alarm system keypad from outside your house, they can also see you entering your code into it. So while putting the alarm system keypad in an obvious spot that is easy to find, you have to be careful that it is not too obvious and you give away your pass code.

The other thing to consider is the additional features on the alarm system keypad. Generally speaking you can simply push a button to notify police or the fire department in case of an emergency. This handy feature needs to be remembered and the unit should be placed somewhere inside the house that is easily reachable from inside as well as outside. Somewhere off the kitchen would be best as the majority of home accidents will happen there.

In addition to that, you also want to make sure that the unit while being obvious to your family is hidden from others. You and your family should be the only ones using the unit unless there are some special circumstances where someone outside this circle needs access to the home. Again use your judgment here.

Follow these simple tips and you can take full advantage of your alarm system keypad without being taken advantage of. Put a little thought into it and it will go a long way.
